In my educational career, I became passionate about grief support as I worked with students and educators who had died or experienced loss. I have walked with others in their grief journey as well as my own. I highly value the importance of coming together to mourn and support each other. 

The children and their families at Billy’s Place have also been my teacher. I have gained insight and understanding of grief as families have found ways to express their loss. I also began to understand the importance of mourning the losses in my own life. As I listened to others, I saw the value of peer support and the importance of sharing ones’ grief with those who understand and care. It has reminded me of the importance of having a community that supports each other. Family members grieve in their own way, and it can be hard to talk about it together. Billy’s Place taught me that when a safe space is created, family members can begin to process their feelings and begin to slowly grieve and mourn together. 

All of these experiences merged with my hummingbird story and became the further inspiration to write this book, with the intention that it be shared and read together as a family. My hope is that the book can help families in their loss. The Facebook site, web page, and other social media are aspects of my further advocacy to provide places where others may share their thoughts as they learn to manage to live without their special person/people.
